📍 Fine Issued During Ongoing Leadership Race
A candidate running to lead the Conservative Party of British Columbia has been penalized for failing to meet campaign rules during the ongoing leadership contest.
The party confirmed that the campaign of Peter Milobar, a sitting MLA, was fined after a required payment was submitted late.
The leadership race is currently underway, with a new party leader expected to be announced later this spring.
đź’° Missed Deadline Leads to $7,500 Penalty
According to party officials, candidates were required to submit a $40,000 fee by April 1 as part of the leadership process.
Milobar’s campaign payment arrived one day late, on April 2, triggering a $7,500 fine for non-compliance.
The delay reportedly occurred after the campaign mailed the cheque, but it was not received by the party before the deadline.
⚖️ Rules Still Apply Despite Circumstances
The party’s Leadership Election Organizing Committee noted that while the delay appeared unintentional, responsibility ultimately lies with each candidate to ensure deadlines are met.
The fine will be deducted from the campaign’s compliance deposit, which must now be replenished within a set timeframe.
Despite the penalty, the candidate remains eligible to continue in the race.
🗳️ High-Stakes Leadership Contest Continues
The B.C. Conservative leadership race has attracted multiple candidates competing to replace former leader John Rustad.
Participants must meet strict financial and procedural requirements, including paying a total of over $100,000 in fees throughout the campaign.
The new leader is expected to be selected on May 30, 2026.
🔎 What This Means Going Forward
While the fine does not disqualify the candidate, it highlights the strict rules governing the leadership race and the importance of compliance.
As the contest continues, candidates will face increasing scrutiny over both their campaigns and their ability to manage key responsibilities.
