Federal Funding Aims to Boost Jobs and Innovation
The federal government has announced a major $125 million investment to support British Columbia’s growing life sciences industry. The funding is expected to generate over 1,000 jobs and create hundreds of student placement opportunities across the province.
Officials say the initiative is part of a broader strategy to elevate Vancouver’s position as both a national leader and an emerging global centre for life sciences and medical innovation.
Major Investment in Bioprinting Technology
A significant portion of the funding — $79 million — has been allocated to Vancouver-based Aspect Biosystems. The company is known for its advanced work in 3D bioprinting, which involves creating living human tissue for therapeutic use.
The investment will help build Canada’s first large-scale bioprinting facility focused on developing treatments for complex conditions such as diabetes and liver disease.
The project, valued at approximately $280 million, is expected to generate close to 300 full-time jobs along with hundreds of co-op positions. The facility may also have applications beyond healthcare, including potential use in defence-related research.
Continued Support for a Growing Project
This latest funding builds on previous government contributions, adding to tens of millions already committed to the bioprinting initiative in earlier announcements.
Leaders at Aspect Biosystems say the new investment will accelerate the development and manufacturing of next-generation cellular therapies.
New Innovation Hub at St. Paul’s Hospital
In addition to the bioprinting project, $48 million will be directed to Providence Health Care Society to support the creation of a new innovation hub at the expanded St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
The facility is designed to advance clinical research and improve access to cutting-edge medical technologies.
Expanding Clinical Trials and Health Technology
The new hub will include:
- A full-scale clinical trial centre covering Phase 1 to Phase 3 studies
- A medical simulation centre for training and research
- A health data platform to support digital innovation in healthcare
This initiative is expected to create nearly 800 jobs and provide hundreds of co-op placements for students in health and technology fields.
Positioning Vancouver as a Global Leader
Government officials emphasize that these investments are aimed at strengthening Canada’s competitive edge in life sciences while attracting global attention to Vancouver’s rapidly expanding ecosystem.
With advancements in biotechnology, healthcare innovation, and research infrastructure, the province is positioning itself as a key player on the international stage.
