Bear Creek Stadium Officially Opens in Surrey

Bear Creek Stadium is now officially open, and it’s already winning the hearts of the Surrey community. On July 8, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke cut the ribbon at the long-awaited stadium, joined by Councillor Doug Elford and a crowd of local residents. The opening marks the completion of a $27.5 million project designed to bring modern sports and event infrastructure to one of the city’s busiest hubs.

Two-thirds of the 2,200-seat grandstand is covered, offering comfort to spectators, while facilities beneath the stands include changerooms and public washrooms. The track has also been upgraded to meet international sports standards, signaling the city’s ambition to host top-level athletic competitions.

A Place for Youth and Community to Thrive

Mayor Locke emphasized the stadium’s value beyond sports, calling it a space where local children will “learn, compete and grow.” She added, “With triple the spectator seating, it creates even more opportunities for community gatherings and for parents to watch their kids in comfort—no more pine benches and splinters.”

The upgraded plazas also now include a new concession area and ticket box office, making the stadium more event-ready than ever.

Stadium Born from a Vision—and Community Support

Councillor Doug Elford shared that the idea for Bear Creek Stadium began with him during the previous council’s term. “It was my idea; I pushed for it,” he said, adding that pressure from local football groups helped accelerate the plan. “It’s taken a while, but it’s finally here. I believe if you build it, they will come—and it looks like that’s about to happen.”

City officials, including Laurie Cavan, general manager of parks, recreation and culture, expressed excitement about hosting higher-level sporting events and cultural celebrations at the new facility. The stadium is not just a venue, but a gathering space for the whole community.
