An officer with the Surrey Police Service (SPS) accidentally discharged their firearm on July 4, resulting in minor damage to a service vehicle. The incident occurred while the officer was on duty. No members of the public or police personnel were injured.

The SPS Professional Standards Section is conducting a formal investigation into the incident. As part of standard protocol, the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) of British Columbia has been notified.

Statement from Police Spokesperson

In an official statement on July 20, SPS media relations officer Sgt. Tige Pollock confirmed the details. “There was minor damage to a service vehicle and no injuries to any members or the public,” he said via email.

The investigation remains ongoing. Sgt. Pollock noted that further information cannot be disclosed at this stage. If the inquiry determines that the officer committed misconduct under the Police Act, disciplinary measures may be applied accordingly, depending on the findings.
