Cricket Fever Hits Surrey Community
Over 100 children gathered at West Newton Community Park for a special cricket clinic featuring World Cup winner Liam Plunkett and South African-American cricketer Corné Dry. The free one-day program, called TD Young Wickets, drew an enthusiastic crowd eager to learn from international stars.
Building Cricket Across North America
Plunkett, who helped England lift the 2019 Cricket World Cup, said his mission now is to expand cricket’s footprint in North America. “We started the first camp in Toronto last month, and it went really well,” he said. “The joy comes from seeing kids learn something new and leave with smiles.”
Local Coaches Join the Effort
The Surrey event ran from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at West Newton Park and included support from Team Canada athletes and coaches from The Stallions Academy. Each young participant received a free Quick Kit filled with essentials: a bat, wicket, ball, bails, water bottle, T-shirt, hat, and guide.
More Than Just Skills—It’s Inspiration
Mick Ramos, senior manager at TD Bank, highlighted the program’s purpose. “These kids are learning from professional talent at the top of their game,” he said. After drills and skill-building, the clinic ended with a spirited match, leaving many with newfound excitement for cricket.
A Nationwide Movement
The Surrey stop is part of a cross-country tour sponsored by TD Bank and Boundaries North. Following Toronto and ahead of Edmonton, the program aims to inspire future Canadian cricket stars. “At TD, our communities thrive when we give back,” Ramos added. “That’s why Young Wickets is so important—it builds both sport and community.”
