Surrey Police investigate shots fired at a business on 80 Avenue, with investigators linking the attack to ongoing extortion-related threats.

Business Damaged in Shooting Incident

Surrey Police Service (SPS) confirmed that shots were fired at a business in the 12800-block of 80 Avenue over the weekend. The incident is believed to have taken place between Saturday, August 23, and the morning of Monday, August 25.

Discovery of Gunfire Damage

Officers responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday to what was initially reported as possible mischief or an attempted break-in. Upon arrival, they determined that the front door of the business had been struck by several bullets fired from outside.

No Injuries Reported

While the damage was significant, police confirmed no injuries to employees, customers, or people in nearby businesses. The area was secured as officers searched for evidence and canvassed the neighbourhood.

Investigation Underway

The SPS Frontline Investigative Support (FLIS) Team has taken over the case. Detectives continued to examine the scene on Monday and are gathering CCTV footage from surrounding properties.

Possible Link to Extortion

Investigators believe the attack may be connected to extortion-related activity, which has surged in Surrey and neighbouring regions. SPS noted that several shootings in recent weeks — including incidents at Kap’s Café, local banquet halls, and other businesses — appear to share similar motives.

Wider Pattern Across Canada

Authorities have linked these threats and shootings to ongoing cases within the South Asian community, stretching beyond Surrey into White Rock, Abbotsford, other B.C. cities, and even into Alberta and Ontario.

Public Appeal for Information

SPS is urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or CCTV from the area to come forward. Tips can be reported to the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 citing file number 25-72804 (SP) or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and www.solvecrime.ca.
