$100 pies fundraiser supports Surrey youth programs this Thanksgiving

Pie season in Surrey is coming with a purpose.

Mackie’s Place Youth Social House is expanding its fundraising efforts this October with a “Pie Pop-Up Shop” just in time for Thanksgiving. The special event offers apple crumble, bumbleberry, and strawberry rhubarb pies for a minimum donation of $100, with all proceeds supporting youth hub programs in Surrey.

The pies are baked from scratch by professional bakers and youth apprentices at a Langley kitchen, part of the long-running Mackie’s Pie Club. Normally, the club offers monthly pies to supporters who donate $200 per month, but this October pop-up marks a rare chance to buy by-donation pies outside of the club.

Orders must be placed by Oct. 5, with pickup scheduled for Oct. 9 at sites in North Surrey and Langley. A limited number of frozen pies, complete with baking instructions, will also be available. While receipts will reflect a fair market value of $40 per pie, the rest goes directly to Mackie’s Place programs.

“Pies change lives,” says executive director Tresha Iype, noting that the funds fuel initiatives like the Mackie’s Place youth bistro, which opened in February 2024 on 104 Avenue and 139 Street. The bistro provides young people with a safe drop-in space to learn restaurant skills and enjoy food and drinks free of charge.

Founded in 2014, Mackie’s Place has grown from a small initiative into a hub of support for Surrey’s youth, backed by creative fundraisers like the Pie Club.
