Surrey postal workers strike at three sites as Canada Post faces reforms, stalled talks, and rising pressure in a nationwide walkout.

Local Picket Lines Mark Start of Strike

Surrey postal workers took to the picket lines Friday, Sept. 26, marking the first full day of a nationwide strike. Demonstrations occurred outside three Canada Post offices in South Surrey, Whalley, and Cloverdale, reflecting widespread worker frustration across Canada.

Strike Sparks from Government Policies and Union Concerns

On Thursday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) declared an immediate nationwide strike. The union cited “the Government’s attack on our postal service and workers” as the catalyst, following federal directives to end door-to-door delivery and other cost-saving reforms proposed in a spring report from the Industrial Inquiry Commission.

Financial Challenges Underpin the Dispute

Government Transformation Minister Joël Lightbound, responsible for Canada Post, described the Crown corporation as facing an “existential crisis,” reporting losses of about $10 million daily. The government’s reforms aim to reduce operating costs while restructuring mail services nationwide.

Workers Share Personal Stakes on the Line

At Whalley, about six postal workers held the picket line outside 10688 King George Blvd. Dave Maris, a six-month employee who recently relocated from Prince George, said it was his first strike experience and expressed hope for a swift resolution. Another worker, identified only as Al, emphasized solidarity: “Postal workers have been without a contract for the previous year and a half… In solidarity, we trust.”

Ongoing Negotiations Leave Outcome Uncertain

Late Friday, federal mediators informed CUPW that Canada Post required “more time to formulate its new global offers.” A union press release indicated members would be notified Monday morning whether talks would resume Wednesday or Thursday.

Strike Impacts and Next Steps

As the walkout continues, Canada Post operations remain disrupted in Surrey and nationwide. Workers demand contract resolution and protection of their roles, while the government seeks to implement cost-saving reforms. Both sides face mounting pressure to reach an agreement as mail and parcel services remain affected.
