Surrey lacrosse players gear up for indoor season as Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex opens new dryfloor space and fields.

Surrey Lacrosse Community Thrilled for New Facility

The Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex is sparking excitement among Surrey lacrosse enthusiasts, promising consistent practice and game space for players across the city.

Kevin Holbeche, president of the Surrey Lacrosse Association (SLA), shared that members are “eagerly anticipating” using the complex’s new dryfloors for the 2026 spring indoor lacrosse season. The association has already applied to the city for access and is waiting for approval.

More Floor Time, More Play

Holbeche explained the significance of the new facility: “It would mean a lot to us. Having more available floor space lets our players get more time on the floor—with more games, more practices, all in a controlled environment.”

Until now, Surrey hasn’t had a covered box for indoor lacrosse. Rain often makes outdoor boxes too slippery and unsafe, limiting practice and game opportunities. This puts SLA at a disadvantage compared to other associations with indoor facilities.

“To be able to have more consistent practice and game times is a huge benefit for the players,” Holbeche added.

Excitement Spreads Across Lacrosse Formats

The enthusiasm isn’t just for box lacrosse. Field lacrosse players are also set to benefit from the new fields being built at Cloverdale Athletic Park (CAP).

“We’re really happy about both,” said Holbeche. “Anytime the city invests in more facilities so kids can play sports, it’s a good thing.”

Future Plans: Growth and Relocation

SLA is also eyeing space in the new Surrey United Soccer Club building at CAP. Once the fields are ready, the association plans to relocate its field programs closer to where most registrants live—Cloverdale, East Surrey, and South Surrey—while its headquarters currently remain in Newton.

“It makes sense to be centered at CAP. It helps us grow the sport in Surrey on both the box and field sides and creates a more attractive opportunity for new players,” Holbeche explained.

Grand Opening Celebration

The Surrey Lacrosse Association will host a booth at the grand opening, sharing information on both box and field lacrosse programs. The event marks a new chapter for the community, with more space, safer play, and better opportunities to grow the sport in Surrey.
