Thousands of litres of fentanyl and GHB precursor chemicals have been seized at the Canada Border Services Agency’s Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility in Delta.
Major joint operation
In a joint operation announced on Oct. 30, the CBSA and RCMP reported the interception of 4,300 litres of illicit drug-making materials shipped from China. The shipment, found in two marine containers bound for Calgary, was examined on May 13 and 15 after being flagged by CBSA’s Pacific Region intelligence team at the National Targeting Centre.
What was found
Officers discovered:
- 3,600 litres of 1,4-butanediol — a precursor to GHB (“date-rape drug”)
- 500 litres of propionyl chloride — a fentanyl precursor
- 200 litres of gamma butyrolactone (GBL) — another chemical that converts to GHB when ingested
Agencies emphasize collaboration
“This seizure demonstrates the important role our officers and intelligence personnel play in keeping communities safe,” said Nina Patel, CBSA Pacific Region’s regional director general.
RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland added that coordinated efforts like this “help reduce risks from toxic drugs and strengthen public safety.”
Investigation ongoing
Authorities say the investigation continues, and no arrests or charges have been made so far.
The operation highlights Canada’s ongoing fight against the importation of toxic drug precursors fueling the country’s opioid crisis.
