B.C. lawyers are reporting shocking extortion threats as police and new task forces rush to respond. Here’s what officials are saying about the rising danger.
Threats Spread Quickly Across the Legal Community
Lawyers across British Columbia say they are getting hit with sudden and frightening demands for large amounts of money. And because these demands come with threats of physical harm, the Law Society of B.C. is urging every lawyer to take them seriously.
The society recently sent a letter to its members, and it explained that several lawyers had already reported direct threats. And since these cases can escalate quickly, the society advised lawyers to reach out to police right away.
Police and Federal Agencies Step In Fast
Police forces across the province say they are aware of the issue. And although investigators cannot confirm whether any active files involve targeted lawyers, they say the reports matter. Furthermore, the new Extortion Task Force is already being flagged to respond when needed.
And because the situation keeps growing, the Canada Border Services Agency has stepped in as well. This move, according to officials, is meant to strengthen the effort to slow the rise in threats and violence against local professionals and businesses.
Officials Raise Concerns About Public Safety
Steve Kooner, the Conservative MLA for Richmond-Queensborough, says the rise in threats is deeply troubling. And because lawyers play such a crucial role in holding the justice system together, he says these attacks reveal a serious public-safety failure.
Kooner says the threats show that violent criminal groups feel bold enough to target the very people who help keep courts running. And because of this, he is now urging the federal government to classify extortion as a terrorism offence.
Call for Stronger Action as Fears Grow
Kooner argues that if violent groups are terrorizing communities, officials must use the strongest possible laws. And since lawyers are now facing real danger, he believes the response must go far beyond warnings.
He says British Columbians deserve safety, clarity, and fast action—not excuses. And with the threat level rising, many in the province are watching closely to see what happens next.
