Surrey Unites for Change at the “Harvest for Hope” Fundraiser

Surrey, BC – On November 15, The Barn buzzed with community spirit as residents, volunteers, and local leaders gathered for the very first “Harvest for Hope” fundraiser. The event marked a major step in Surrey’s growing effort to tackle food waste while supporting families who rely on community food programs.

Turning Surplus Food into Lifelines

Harvest for Hope, a Surrey-based nonprofit led by Noemi Victorino and her dedicated team, has quickly become a vital connector between grocery partners like Save-On-Foods and local organizations serving food-insecure families. The group rescues surplus food that would otherwise be discarded and redirects it to meal programs and community services across the city.

“Every donated apple, loaf of bread, or tin of soup gets a second chance,” Victorino shared, surrounded by volunteers. “We’re making sure good food reaches neighbours who need it most.”

A Night That Moved the Community

Mayor Brenda Locke attended the fundraiser to show the city’s full support for the food rescue movement. Funds raised will go toward purchasing a dedicated van—dramatically expanding Harvest for Hope’s capacity to collect, transport, and distribute nutritious food throughout Surrey.

The evening featured moving stories from food recipients, volunteer experiences, and heartfelt appeals that inspired both giving and deeper community involvement.

Growing Momentum Across Surrey

Local service groups, supporters, and grassroots changemakers joined the event, united by the belief that no one in Surrey should face hunger. The Mayor praised the initiative, noting, “Your efforts are helping build a more caring and connected Surrey.”

Harvest for Hope’s work reflects a broader trend in Surrey and the Lower Mainland, where community-driven food redistribution programs are expanding to combat both food waste and food insecurity.

Building a Stronger Future

With a new van on the way and a strengthened volunteer base, Harvest for Hope plans to triple its reach in the coming months. Organizers encourage residents to get involved through volunteering or donations, emphasizing that meaningful change begins at the community level.

In Surrey, hope is truly harvested one meal at a time—and initiatives like this prove how compassion can grow when a city comes together.
