City of Surrey Moves Forward with 72nd Avenue Transformation

Surrey is advancing plans to turn 72nd Avenue into a continuous east-west connector stretching from Scott Road all the way to 196th Street — a major infrastructure push expected to ease congestion and support future growth.

The City has issued a request for bids to build the next section of the corridor upgrade, covering 144th to 152nd Streets. The project includes:

• Widening from two lanes to four travel lanes
• Multi-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians
• A potential traffic signal at 146th Street
• Upgraded transit stops with new bus shelters

Construction for this phase is expected to begin in 2026.

A Growing East–West Transportation Spine

Currently, 72nd Avenue runs four lanes between Scott Road and 144th Street with no on-street parking. Surrey’s long-term vision is to mirror this wider layout throughout the corridor, improving traffic flow and regional connectivity.

Another major segment is under design between 152nd Street and Highway 15/Fraser Highway. Council previously directed engineering teams to proceed with plans featuring:

• Two travel lanes in each direction
• Improved agricultural drainage
• Wide shoulders to support farm vehicles while keeping traffic moving

This extension aims to reduce pressure on nearby busy routes such as Highway 10, 64th Avenue, and 88th Avenue.

Work Already Underway Across Multiple Sections

Upgrades are already in progress between 188th and 196th Streets, where crews are widening the road to four lanes and adding sidewalks and bike lanes. That work is expected to finish by spring next year.

Another project — from Fraser Highway to 184th Street — reached completion earlier this year.

Delta’s Section Nearing Completion

On the Delta side of Scott Road, the second phase of the 72nd Avenue improvements (115th Street to Scott Road) is substantially complete. A small construction presence will remain to address final deficiencies, according to the City of Delta.
