B.C. residents will receive a province-wide emergency alert test on Nov. 19 at 1:55 p.m. Learn what to expect and why it matters.

Get Ready for a Loud Alert on Wednesday

On Wednesday, Nov. 19 at exactly 1:55 p.m., phones across B.C. may suddenly buzz, ring, and flash a bold message: This is ONLY a TEST. That sound might be a surprise, yet there’s no need to worry. It’s part of a planned test of the province’s emergency alert system.

The notification will reach every compatible cellphone on an LTE network. At the same time, regular shows on radio and TV will pause for a short emergency broadcast. After that brief interruption, programming will continue as usual.

What the Alert System Actually Does

The B.C. alert system handles serious warnings. Although it sometimes gets confused with the federal earthquake early warning system, it works differently. It sends out alerts for:

  • Extreme weather from Environment and Climate Change Canada
  • Police emergencies, including Amber Alerts

In a real emergency, the alert would explain the danger and offer clear steps to stay safe.

Why This Test Matters

The system is tested twice a year to make sure everything works smoothly. That way, if something serious happens, alerts can be sent out instantly. Testing also helps people know what to expect and helps raise public awareness.

Right after the test, residents are encouraged to fill out a short online survey. It will be available in both English and French. The data will help the province learn how many people actually received the alert.

What You Can Do Next

  • Keep your phone on
  • Stay on LTE if possible
  • Listen for the alert
  • Complete the survey
  • Share the experience with friends and family

Quick Reminder

It’s only a test. Still, it reminds us that staying informed is one of the best ways to stay safe. Preparation today makes a big difference tomorrow. Stay alert, stay connected, and stay ready — just in case.
