BC Emergency Alert Test Scheduled for 1:55 p.m. Today

Residents across Surrey and the rest of British Columbia will receive a BC Emergency Alert System test at 1:55 p.m. Pacific Time today, Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The province is conducting the test as part of a national effort to confirm that emergency alerts reliably reach the public during real crises such as wildfires, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes.

The alert will be sent to compatible cellphones, television networks and radio stations. It will appear only on devices connected to an LTE network and powered on — phones in airplane mode will not receive the test.

What the Test Message Will Say

The message is clearly marked as a test, and no action is required from the public.
The alert will read:

“This is a TEST of the BC Emergency Alert System issued by the Province of British Columbia. This is ONLY a TEST. In an emergency, this message would tell you about the hazard and how to stay safe. This information could save your life. Visit emergencyinfobc.ca/test to learn more and give feedback on this test. This is ONLY a TEST.”

Why These Alerts Matter

Emergency alerts are issued when there is an imminent threat to life or public safety. In B.C., the system is used for:

  • tsunamis
  • floods
  • wildfires
  • extreme heat
  • civil emergencies

Since 2024, the federal Earthquake Early Warning system has also been active, sending automated alerts seconds before strong shaking is expected in many areas.

Residents Encouraged to Provide Feedback

After the test, British Columbians are encouraged to complete a brief survey to help improve the reach and performance of the alerting system. Officials use the feedback to strengthen communication tools ahead of real emergencies.
