Roughly 67,000 health facility workers across British Columbia have reached a tentative collective agreement that includes wage increases and compensation for past reductions.

The deal between the Health Employers Association of B.C. and the Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) provides a three per cent general wage increase each year for four years, matching the recent public-service agreement reached with the BC General Employees’ Union.

Restoration Fund Addresses 2004 Wage Cuts

The agreement includes a $60.5 million wage restoration fund to compensate employees who saw their pay reduced in 2004. These adjustments will be phased in over the duration of the four-year contract, alongside targeted increases to shift premiums.

Hospital Employees’ Union president Lynn Bueckert said the deal represents a major step toward repairing wage cuts implemented two decades ago and ensuring pay remains competitive within the broader public sector.

The HEU represents approximately 95 per cent of workers covered by the agreement, with the remaining members belonging to eight other unions, including the BCGEU.

Wide Range of Workers Covered

The facilities bargaining unit includes a diverse group of employees such as care aides, maintenance staff, IT workers, administrative employees, and other essential roles in hospitals and long-term care facilities. A framework for this deal was reached in August.

Union members will now review the terms as ratification processes begin.
