A New Leader Steps In
Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) has officially welcomed a new president and CEO – Bill Aujla, a well-known Vancouver lawyer and real estate executive. He succeeds Michael Heeney, who led the organization beginning in 2017 and again in 2023 after a brief pause in operations.
From Vancouver to Surrey’s Growth Hub
Aujla brings a strong track record in both public and private sectors. Previously, he served as:
- Vice-president of real estate at Aquilini Investment Group
- Project manager for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Village
- A key contributor to major municipal initiatives across Vancouver
Because of his diverse background, the SCDC board believes his leadership will offer strategic direction, fresh ideas, and meaningful partnerships across Surrey.
What Is SCDC and Why It Matters
SCDC is a City of Surrey-owned real estate development company created to transform surplus municipal land into impactful projects. Its goal is simple: generate revenue and support Surrey’s long-term community, social, and economic vision.
Previously completed or ongoing projects include:
- 3 Civic Plaza
- Campbell Heights industrial lands
- Gateway and Newton Town Centre
- Centre Block development downtown
Board and CEO Share Their Vision
SCDC board chair Darren Donnelly praised Aujla’s experience in law, strategy, real estate, and project management. He emphasized that such expertise will be vital as Surrey continues to expand rapidly.
Aujla said he is “honoured to lead SCDC” and eager to collaborate with City Council, local stakeholders, staff, and partners to move Surrey forward. His focus will be on environmental goals, cultural growth, and economic development.
Thanking the Former CEO
Before stepping down, former CEO Michael Heeney reflected on his time at SCDC, noting that Surrey is well-positioned for a new era of development. He highlighted upcoming opportunities in Newton Town Centre and the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, where new master plans are already in motion.
