Carney Mulls Return Trip to Washington After Dismissing Trump Contact

OTTAWA  Prime Minister Mark Carney is reportedly considering another trip to Washington, D.C., just weeks after dismissing a question about when he last spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump.

During a recent press event, Carney was asked about his contact with Trump. His response  “Who cares?”  triggered criticism from Conservative MPs, who argue the dismissive remark reflects poorly on Canada’s priorities amid ongoing trade tensions.

An official close to the prime minister’s office told reporters that Carney is indeed considering a return trip to the U.S. capital, though no final decision has been made. The potential trip comes at a delicate time, as both countries navigate high-stakes trade negotiations.

Carney has already met with Trump once in Washington. The leaders discussed key issues like trade, security, and tariffs and Carney has said there is “more work to do.” He has emphasized the talks must be based on mutual sovereignty, reinforcing that Canada is “not for sale.”

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed ongoing communications between the two governments. She noted that diplomatic talks remain “in a constructive space,” even as Canada pushes to renegotiate terms and protect its economic interests.

Still, Carney’s recent remark “when America wants to come back and have conversations on the trade side, we will have those discussions”  suggests he is setting his own terms for engagement.

If the trip goes ahead, it could signal a renewed effort to reset Canada-U.S. relations and lay groundwork for deeper cooperation while also serving as a reminder of Canada’s insistence on respect and autonomy in those talks.
