Surrey’s 18-year-old hockey talent Grant Reid secures a spot on Team Canada West for the 2025 Junior A World Challenge in Quebec this December.
A Surrey Skater Hits the National Stage
What a moment for Surrey-raised forward Grant Reid, who has officially landed a spot on Team Canada West for the 2025 Junior A World Challenge. The tournament takes place Dec. 7–13 in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, and excitement is already building.
At just 18 years old, Reid has caught the attention of Hockey Canada, earning his place among the 22 players selected to represent the west in the four-team international showdown featuring Canada East, the U.S., and Sweden.
Standing Out Among Elite Talent
Only four players from British Columbia made the roster, and Reid is one of them joining Richmond’s Matthew Hikida, along with Victoria-born defenders Sullivan Humeniuk and Taynton Lavender. That alone speaks volumes about his performance this season.
And speaking of performance he’s on fire. Playing with the Calgary Canucks in the AJHL, the left-shot forward (5’9”) has scored nine goals and 15 assists, totalling 24 points so far. Wearing jersey #20, he currently ranks second in team scoring for the defending Centennial Cup champions.
From Semiahmoo to the National Stage
Reid’s journey began with the Semiahmoo Ravens Minor Hockey Association, where his talent emerged early. Later, he moved to Yale Academy in Abbotsford, continuing to impress before being drafted 47th overall by the Victoria Royals in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. Every step has led to this moment.
However, a major shift affected this year’s selection process. Because the BC Hockey League is no longer affiliated with Hockey Canada, the Team Canada West roster was formed using players only from Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Superior International leagues making Reid’s selection even more impressive.
Hockey Canada Reacts
Kurt Keats, Hockey Canada’s manager of hockey operations, shared strong confidence in both rosters, explaining that every player and staff member is “excited to wear the Maple Leaf next month in Québec.”
And really who wouldn’t be?
