White Rock Players Club gears up for its 70th Christmas panto, The Snow Queen, blending local talent, comedy, and festive magic for all ages.

Wackiness Takes Center Stage in White Rock

Being funny on stage might look effortless, but a recent rehearsal at Ocean PARC Playhouse proves otherwise. The White Rock Players Club is preparing its 70th Christmas pantomime, The Snow Queen, and behind the glitter, bright lights, and catchy tunes, a lot of hard work is happening.

Community Cast Brings the Story to Life

Nearly 30 performers, ranging from seven years old to seasoned veterans, fill the stage, rehearsing intricate choreography, songs, and group numbers. Director Lisa Pavilionis, choreographer Leslie Kuny, and musical director Marquis Byrd guide the ensemble with precision, ensuring every step and note hits its mark.

Set designer Robin Maggs and lead painter Carla Maskall have created a colorful, immersive backdrop, turning the stage into a visual wonderland. But even with stunning scenery and enthusiastic performers, perfection requires constant effort. “I can’t hear you!” Kuny shouts at one point, quickly reminding the cast that practice makes perfect.

Veterans Shine in Comedic Roles

Returning to the spotlight is Bryce Paul Mills as Mama Milla, the panto’s flamboyant Dame. With years of experience and a flair for comedic chaos, Mills brings energy, audience interaction, and a touch of saucy humour to the show. Fellow veteran Ryan “Tiny” Elliott joins as the henchman Bob, bringing the same infectious charm after a nine-year hiatus from pantomime.

The camaraderie on stage is tangible. Cast members support one another, sharing notes, gently correcting mistakes, and syncing seamlessly. “My bad,” says Mariah Reitmeier, the Snow Queen, after missing a few choreographed steps. Telepathy among the creative team is evident, with Pavilionis and Byrd often anticipating each other’s next move.

A Witty Tale with Local Twists

This year’s script, crafted by Players Club president Rebekah MacEwan, puts a fresh spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic. An evil Hobgoblin casts a spell on the Queen of Olde White Rock, plunging the town into endless winter. The cast’s mission: restore joy while delivering laughs, songs, and interactive fun.

Audience participation is key. Expect sing-alongs, cheering for the heroes, and booing the villains with gusto. Local references, playful satire, and nods to pop culture courtesy of Gen Z character Brittineigh add extra layers of humour and charm.

Music, Laughs, and Fan-Favourite Shenanigans

Music remains a highlight, including the beloved The Wonderful Year We Fell in Love, with lyrics by local musician Tom Saunders. The panto also features the iconic giraffe Shenanigans, now sporting a refreshed costume, ready to delight children and adults alike.

For Pavilionis, directing the show is both a professional and personal joy. Having grown up on the White Rock stage, she knows the magic of pantomime. “We have a wonderful group – it’s great when everybody clicks together,” she says, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that fuels the performance.

Countdown to Christmas Magic

With rehearsals in full swing, it’s clear that the 2025 edition of The Snow Queen promises laughter, music, and festive enchantment. From the youngest performer to the veteran actors, everyone is united in one goal: delivering a holiday spectacle that White Rock audiences won’t soon forget.
