Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) has secured a $1-million investment from Genome British Columbia to expand its cutting-edge research supporting B.C.’s agriculture sector.

Announced at KPU’s Newton campus, the funding will help more than 60 industry, First Nations and community partners tackle issues like climate change and food security using genomic innovation.

Since its 2019 launch and 2023 expansion, the AGC has researched heat-resistant crops and cattle and developed a new hop variety for B.C. brewers. The new investment will boost faculty projects and give students more hands-on lab experience.

Genome BC executive Tony Brooks said the partnership “strengthens our shared mission to advance genomics research in B.C.” KPU Dean Dr. Brett Favaro added that the funding “will take our work to the next level.”
