Surrey City Council will vote Monday night on whether to endorse the Surrey School District’s 2026/2027 Eligible School Sites Proposal, which outlines the district’s long-term land and funding needs for new schools.

Each year, B.C. school districts must submit a capital plan to the Ministry of Education, identifying future school sites, locations, and estimated costs. Surrey’s plan, approved at a public meeting on September 17, projects rapid growth across Surrey and White Rock over the next decade.

According to the district’s estimates, 58,720 new dwellings are expected to be built in the next 10 years, resulting in an additional 10,998 school-aged children.

City Planning General Manager Ron Gill recommends that council endorse the plan. His report notes that under the Local Government Act, if the City fails to respond within 60 days of receiving the request, it is automatically deemed to have accepted the proposal.

The plan anticipates a net increase in student population that will require 24 school site acquisitions, including 22 new schools, one replacement site, and one site expansion over the next decade.

Based on current serviced land prices, the proposed acquisitions and expansions will cost an estimated $931.6 million.
