Salmon Spotting map shows Surrey sites in a ‘great year’ for it
It’s a spectacular season for salmon watchers — and Surrey is one of the best places to experience it.
According to the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF), 2025 is shaping up to be a “great year” for salmon returns, with strong numbers reported across Metro Vancouver and beyond. The foundation’s interactive “Salmon Spotting” map highlights dozens of viewing locations across B.C., including several right here in Surrey.
At Tynehead Hatchery (16585 96 Ave.), more than 500 coho and several Chinook salmon have recently returned, following earlier concerns about low water levels in the Serpentine River. Chum salmon are also expected soon.
Other Surrey viewing hotspots include:
- Little Campbell Hatchery
- Chantrell Creek in Elgin Heritage Park (south of Crescent Road)
- Little Campbell Estuary (off 8 Avenue and 160 Street near the footbridge)
“Ocean conditions have been favourable, and stewardship efforts across B.C. are paying off,” said Michael Meneer, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. “The number of salmon returning this year shows their resilience. We hope people take the opportunity to get outdoors and witness this incredible migration.”
From late summer to early winter, Pacific salmon make their dramatic return to spawn — a journey that can cover more than 3,000 kilometres, with some leaping up to two metres to clear obstacles.
PSF’s Salmon Spotting map lists over 90 family-friendly locations across B.C. with marked trails and safe public viewing areas. Visitors can also take part in the #SalmonSpotting social media contest at psf.ca for a chance to win prizes including a two-night hotel stay, helicopter trip, and whale-watching adventure.
So grab your boots, head to Surrey’s streams, and experience one of nature’s most powerful homecomings — the return of the Pacific salmon.
