Surrey groups unite to raise funds for Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa, supporting families with rebuilding, water access, and long-term recovery.
Surrey Steps Up as Jamaica Recovers
A Community Moved to Action
When Hurricane Melissa tore across Jamaica on Oct. 28, it left a trail of historic destruction. Although the storm passed, the heartbreak did not. With more than 400,000 people affected and agricultural losses rising beyond $29.5 billion, the need for support has grown by the day. And now, Surrey residents are stepping forward to help.
A Nation in Mourning
By Nov. 11, officials confirmed the loss of 45 lives. During a special briefing, Jamaica’s Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, spoke with deep emotion, urging the country to keep grieving families in their thoughts. She reminded everyone that each number represents a devastated family navigating both loss and the massive challenges left behind by the storm.
Surrey Groups Join Forces
Because of the widespread impact, local Jamaican organizations in Surrey have launched a major fundraising drive to offer practical relief and renewed hope. The Canadian Jamaican Medical Assistance Society (CJMAS), the Jamaican Canadian Cultural Association of BC (JCCABC), and Limbo for All are teaming up for an event on Sunday, Nov. 23, at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School from noon to 5 p.m.
CJMAS vice-president Judi Lewinson explains that the event aims to raise $25,000 to help families rebuild homes, access clean drinking water, and regain stability. She emphasized that the effort is not only about money. Instead, it’s a heartfelt expression of unity, echoing Jamaica’s motto: “Out of Many, One People.”
Giving, Gathering, and Good Food
To encourage community participation, the first 500 attendees who donate at least $20 will receive a free Jamaican patty and a drink. The organizers expect an afternoon filled with music, culture, and shared purpose. Every dollar raised will go toward immediate relief as well as long-term rebuilding across Jamaica.
Standing Together Through the Aftermath
Although Hurricane Melissa struck thousands of kilometres away, the impact has reached hearts across Surrey. Because of this collective effort and the compassion fueling it families in Jamaica will receive vital support during an incredibly difficult time.
