RCMP Expands Resources as Extortion-Linked Violence Escalates Across B.C.
The BC RCMP is ramping up police resources across the Lower Mainland in response to an escalating extortion crisis that has hit the South Asian community particularly hard. Officials warn the threat is sophisticated, fast-moving, and not tied to a single group.
Shootings Surge in Surrey and Abbotsford
Surrey has recorded 95 extortion reports and 45 shots-fired incidents this year, including a South Surrey home targeted twice within five days, the latest on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Abbotsford has also seen a surge, reporting 40 extortion files and multiple shootings tied to the same networks.
Police say these numbers shift daily as investigations grow.
Specialized Units Added to the Response
To combat the violence, the RCMP is deploying more specialized teams, including:
- Emergency Response Teams
- Police Dog Services
- CFSEU-BC (Gang Enforcement)
- BC Highway Patrol
These teams join the Provincial Extortion Task Force, formed in September and involving RCMP detachments, Surrey Police Service, Abbotsford Police, Delta Police, CBSA, and Transit Police.
The new resources will focus on prevention, intelligence gathering, deterrence, proactive patrols, vehicle interdictions, and targeted stops.
Eby Calls for Stronger Communication From Task Force
Premier David Eby said he was briefed late Wednesday night, acknowledging the deep fear gripping communities south of the Fraser.
“These attacks cut at something fundamental, a sense of safety in your home and business,” he said.
He praised investigators for recent CBSA actions that removed three individuals from Canada linked to the extortion network, with another 78 foreign nationals under scrutiny.
However, Eby said the task force must “communicate more clearly” with the public about what is being done.
Political Criticism Mounts
BC Conservative leader John Rustad blasted the provincial government after the latest South Surrey shooting, accusing the NDP of losing control of public safety.
Conservative MLAs Brent Chapman and Harman Bhangu echoed similar concerns on social media.
A Crisis Affecting the Entire Region
RCMP officials stress the threat is province-wide and evolving.
Assistant Commissioner John Brewer said the new units will be deployed strategically to support “communities across B.C., not just one city.”
