Surrey Councillor Pushes for Province-Wide Fireworks Restriction
Surrey Councillor Rob Stutt is asking the B.C. government to adopt a province-wide restriction on the possession and use of fireworks, arguing that inconsistent municipal bylaws are fuelling widespread illegal use across Surrey.
Stutt introduced the notice of motion at the November 17 council meeting, with debate set for December 1.
Hundreds of Complaints Every Year
Despite Surrey ramping up enforcement in recent years, Stutt says the city continues to face hundreds of complaints tied to illegal fireworks activity — particularly around Halloween, Diwali, and other celebrations.
He says the problem persists because fireworks remain easily obtainable in neighbouring municipalities with looser rules.
“A Patchwork of Regulations”
Stutt’s motion says the lack of consistency across B.C. has led to “unlawful availability” and an uneven playing field for enforcement.
“This is leading to hundreds of complaints about the illegal use of fireworks within the City of Surrey, given the inconsistent patchwork of local regulations,” Stutt stated.
Asking Victoria to Step In
Stutt is urging Surrey council to instruct staff to formally contact the provincial government, requesting a B.C.-wide restriction on both the use and possession of consumer fireworks.
The motion will be discussed and voted on at Surrey council’s December 1 regular meeting.
