Hope Rises for Lakes District ER as New Doctors Join

The Lakes District Hospital in Burns Lake has faced countless emergency room closures this year. Yet, at last, something encouraging has arrived. After months of worry, stress, and frustration, Northern Health says help is on the way.

New Doctors on the Horizon

Northern Health responded to concerns shared on Facebook and announced that four new physicians have signed offer letters. Each doctor currently completes their training. They may begin practicing in Burns Lake starting in Summer 2026, if all goes smoothly.

Why the ER Keeps Closing

The hospital’s emergency department closed again on September 19, 2025, from 8 a.m. until the following morning. Local residents already knew the reason: a serious shortage of doctors. This lack of staff has caused dozens of closures in 2025 alone.

Health Authority Responds

Northern Health spoke directly to the community and shared updates. The team explained it works hard to hire new doctors. It also works to make the process easier for U.S. and international practitioners.

However, hiring takes time. So, until help arrives, Northern Health continues to bring in locum physicians to cover shifts when possible.

A Widespread Challenge

Burns Lake is not alone. Other hospitals across northern B.C. face the same shortage. Many rural and remote regions compete for the same professionals. Northern Health asked locals for patience and understanding as staff navigate these ongoing challenges.

What to Do in an Emergency

Residents are urged to call 9-1-1 if they need urgent medical care. BC Ambulance will make sure patients are taken to the nearest suitable facility.
