Surrey, Canada – The Province of British Columbia has officially declared November 24, 2025, as the 350th anniversary of the supreme martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. The proclamation honours Guru Sahib’s unparalleled sacrifice to defend religious freedom, human rights, and the protection of the oppressed — a stand regarded as unmatched in world history.
Issued in the name of His Majesty King Charles III, the proclamation also recognizes the deep cultural, social, and economic contributions of the Sikh community in B.C., whose presence dates back to the early 1900s. The announcement describes Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji as a protector of religious freedom and a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and harmony.
Ceremony Held at Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Surrey
A formal proclamation ceremony took place at Singh Sabha Gurdwara, where British Columbia’s Attorney General Niki Sharma read the proclamation before the congregation and presented a framed copy to the Gurdwara management committee. She was warmly welcomed by community members and leadership.
Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills Jesse Sunner and Parliamentary Secretary Amna Shah were also present. Both emphasized that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom continues to inspire societies around the world to stand for justice, uphold human rights, and protect religious freedoms for all.
The Gurdwara committee honoured the ministers with mementos of appreciation for their participation and support.
Honouring a Legacy of Courage and Freedom
Renowned Sikh scholar Gyan Singh Sandhu addressed the gathering, speaking about the spiritual and historical significance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s sacrifice. He reminded the sangat that Guru Sahib gave his life not just for Sikhs but for the protection of universal freedom and the rights of all humanity. His message, he said, remains a guiding light for peace, tolerance, and fearless moral courage.
A Message for Today’s World
This provincial proclamation stands as a reaffirmation of B.C.’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect for every faith. It marks a moment of remembrance — and a call to protect the values Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji lived and died for: human rights, justice, and the freedom of every individual.
