What Happened Firefighter Hurt on Vacation

A young firefighter from Surrey, Trevor Humhej (29), was seriously injured while vacationing in Maui, Hawaii on November 15. According to his colleagues and family, he suffered a traumatic spinal-cord injury a fracture at the C5 vertebra after a medical emergency in the ocean. His brother pulled him to shore, and he was rushed to hospital.

By November 24, Trevor was transferred back to a hospital in B.C., where he remains in intensive care. His recovery is ongoing, and doctors have warned that the future now holds many uncertainties.

Community Steps Up Fundraiser Launched

In response to the crisis, friends and family launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe aiming to raise US $200,000 to help with lost wages, living expenses, medical bills, and long-term rehabilitation costs for Trevor and his wife, Taylor Humhej.

By December 1, 2025 just two days after the campaign went live the community had already contributed close to US $106,000, reflecting strong public support. Donations ranged widely, including a top anonymous gift of US $10,000.

The campaign message highlights Trevor’s years of service as a firefighter someone who spent his life helping others and now the community hopes to give back when he needs it most.

Why This Matters More Than Medical Bills

For Trevor and his wife, funds from this campaign will cover urgent needs: medical treatment, rehabilitation therapy, daily living costs, and income loss while he recovers. The uncertainty around his long-term mobility and health means expenses could grow quickly.

For the local community and especially fellow firefighters this fundraiser is a sign of solidarity. It shows how much they value first responders who risk their lives for public safety.

The story also highlights a hard truth: even brave emergency workers can face unpredictable dangers during personal time. And when disaster strikes, community support can make a life-changing difference.
