Surrey-Newton candidate Joginder Randhawa faces a $250 fine after campaign signs missed a required authorization statement, prompting an Elections BC warning.

A Costly Slip During the Surrey-Newton Race

First, let’s talk about something simple yet surprising. Joginder Singh Randhawa, an Independent candidate in the 2024 Surrey-Newton MLA race, received a $250 fine from Elections BC. He acted as his own financial agent, yet his campaign signs missed one small but important detail. They did not show the required authorization statement. As a result, the issue grew quickly.

Next, a complaint reached Elections BC. Then an investigation began. Soon afterward, officials confirmed that Randhawa spent $1,841 on signs. However, the signs lacked the legal wording that must appear on all election advertising. Moreover, Section 231 of the Election Act is clear. It says all advertising must show who authorized it. Also, it must be easy for the public to see. In addition, it must appear on every piece of campaign material.

What the Investigation Found

Adam Barnes, director of investigations for Elections BC, reviewed the case. He stated that the missing authorization meant the law had been broken. Still, he also noted something important. The signs stayed up for less than five days. Furthermore, the inquiry showed no intent to avoid the law. Even so, the rule was still broken, and the fine still followed.

Meanwhile, officials stressed why this matters. Clear authorization helps voters understand who pays for campaign messaging. Also, it keeps spending open to public view. In addition, it helps maintain trust during an election period.

What Happens Next for Randhawa

Now, Randhawa has 40 days from December 1 to pay the fine. Beyond that, he also has another option. He may request a review by an adjudicator. He must send the request in writing within 14 days of receiving the notice. Moreover, the review would allow him to explain his position.

Even so, the case stands as a reminder. Small details can spark big consequences during an election. And, as this situation shows, every campaign rule matters.
