Canadian Volunteer Reports Violent Attack in West Bank

A woman from Nelson, British Columbia says she was violently attacked by Israeli settlers while trying to protect Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. The incident involved her and three other international volunteers, according to her account.

The attack reportedly happened during the early hours in a village near Jericho, where the group was staying to support local residents facing escalating settler violence.

What Happened, According to the Victims and Witnesses

According to statements from local activists and groups monitoring the situation, around ten masked settlers broke into the home where the volunteers were sleeping. Two of the settlers stood guard outside with rifles.

Inside, the volunteers were reportedly beaten and robbed. The Canadian woman said she suffered bruises to her back and face and injuries to her ribs. Her passport, money, phone and other personal items were reportedly stolen.

Volunteers told media the attackers yelled that foreigners “had no right” to be in the area a message apparently aimed at intimidating those offering support to local Palestinian communities.

After the assault the victims were taken to hospital. The Canadian government has confirmed it is providing consular support to the Canadian woman involved.

Context: Rising Violence and International Volunteer Involvement

The incident is not isolated. Local activists say violence by settlers against Palestinian civilians and their supporters has increased sharply over recent months. Many international volunteers have travelled to the West Bank to help protect at-risk communities from attacks, particularly in villages where tensions are high.

Organisations such as Unarmed Civilian Protection in Palestine and similar volunteer-based protection groups have documented multiple assaults, thefts, and intimidation campaigns often carried out at night and targeting civilians or international volunteers.

Reaction and Support Efforts

After news of the assault spread, activists called for increased protection for volunteers and for international observers to document violence in conflict zones. They say foreign nationals who choose to stand with vulnerable communities should receive better safeguards from both local authorities and their home countries.

Meanwhile, the Canadian woman said she does not plan to abandon the work. She told reporters that despite what happened, she believes supporting Palestinian rights and safety remains vital and said she hoped her story would shine light on the daily risks faced by civilians under occupation.

Why This Matters Human Rights, Safety, and International Solidarity

The assault highlights the dangers faced by local civilians and foreign volunteers working in conflict zones. It raises urgent questions about protection, accountability, and the role of governments in safeguarding citizens abroad.

The incident also underscores the broader human rights concerns tied to ongoing violence and displacement in the West Bank. Observers say international attention and pressure remain crucial to help protect vulnerable populations and ensure accountability for violent acts.
