Heavy rain and gusty winds hit Lower Mainland and B.C. highways today. Drivers warned of pooling water, poor visibility, and gusts up to 80 km/h.

Rain and Wind Slam Lower Mainland

Monday kicks off with wet and blustery conditions across the Lower Mainland. Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for several areas, including West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge. Heavy showers are also expected along Howe Sound and the Sea to Sky Highway, stretching from Squamish to Brandywine.

According to the federal agency, a frontal system moving through the south coast is bringing steady rain, which could intensify into heavy downpours by late morning. Drivers are advised to slow down and leave extra travel time, as water pooling on roads and reduced visibility could create tricky conditions.

Highway Alerts as Winds Pick Up

Alongside the rain, strong winds are predicted across key B.C. routes. Alerts have been issued for:

  • Sea to Sky Highway
  • Okanagan Connector (Merritt to Kelowna)
  • Coquihalla Highway (Hope to Merritt)
  • Highway 3 (Hope to Princeton)
  • Coquihalla Highway (Merritt to Kamloops)

Gusts could reach up to 80 km/h later today and into the evening, making highway travel especially hazardous. Commuters should remain cautious, secure loose items, and monitor updated travel advisories.

Safety Tips for Rainy, Windy Travel

Environment Canada emphasizes that even experienced drivers should exercise extra care. Some practical steps include:

  • Reducing speed on wet roads
  • Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles
  • Avoiding sudden maneuvers during strong gusts
  • Checking real-time road and weather updates before heading out

With a mix of heavy rain and powerful winds, Monday is shaping up to be a day when caution is key for everyone traveling through the Lower Mainland and surrounding highways.
