Actors needed for Naked Stage reading in Surrey
Naked Stage Productions has put out a call for performers for its first show of 2026. The Surrey company specializes in “readers theatre,” where actors stay seated with scripts in hand on a bare stage. The focus stays on character, voice, and story, much like an old‑school radio drama.
For this show, actors are needed for The Savannah Disputation, a sharp comedy by playwright Evan Smith. The production will run at Newton Cultural Centre on February 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on March 1. Director Simon Challenger will guide the cast through the fast, dialogue‑driven script.
Roles and character breakdown
The audition notice lists four roles. Mary is a woman 65 or older, southern, Catholic, direct and plain‑spoken, and the sister of Margaret. Margaret is also 65 or older, southern, Catholic, more reserved, and Mary’s sister.
Melissa is a 35‑plus southern, fundamentalist Christian who comes across as a bit of a misfit. Father Murphy is a 50‑plus southern Catholic priest who leans slightly geeky. Actors of all backgrounds are encouraged to read for the roles if they can capture the personalities and accents.
Story and rehearsal schedule
The Savannah Disputation centres on two elderly sisters whose southern charm vanishes when a young door‑to‑door evangelist knocks on their door. The clash of beliefs quickly turns into a lively theological showdown. The play balances humour with deeper questions about faith and how people handle spiritual disagreement.
Rehearsals will take place at Newton Cultural Centre on Tuesday evenings from January 20 to February 24. A technical rehearsal is set for Thursday, February 26. Anyone cast must commit to every rehearsal and performance and must hold or purchase a membership in Naked Stage Productions Society.
How to audition
Auditions for actors needed for Naked Stage reading in Surrey will be held on Saturday, January 17, in the theatre at Newton Cultural Centre. Each performer will be given a 15‑minute slot. To book a time, email producer Kelly Thompson at kellyinva@gmail.com.
In the message, applicants should note which role they want, and attach a recent headshot and acting résumé. Audition sides will be sent out in advance so actors can prepare. The deadline to secure an audition appointment is January 15.
Part of a four‑show season
This readers theatre project is part of Naked Stage’s four‑show 2025–2026 season. The lineup began with In The Cards in November. After The Savannah Disputation, the company will present Jeffrey Hatcher’s The Jigsaw Puzzle in April and Ken Levine’s America’s Sexiest Couple in early June.
Newton Cultural Centre, home base for the company, is located at 13530 72 Avenue in Surrey. For local performers eager to get back on stage with a low‑pressure script‑in‑hand format, this Naked Stage reading offers a welcoming entry point into the new year.
