Surrey launches new waste chatbot

The City of Surrey has launched a Surrey waste chatbot for residents and local businesses. It aims to give instant answers about garbage collection, recycling and cleanup programs.

Users can ask what items go in each bin, how to prepare material and when crews will arrive. The Surrey waste chatbot also helps people book free pick-ups for large items, including mattresses and other bulky goods.

24/7 access to waste information

Mayor Brenda Locke says the new tool makes information easier to reach at any hour. She notes that the Surrey waste chatbot supports a cleaner, more sustainable city by helping people “do the right thing” with waste and recycling.

Because it is available 24/7, residents no longer need to wait on hold or send emails. Instead, they can open the chat, type a question and get guidance in seconds.

Building on earlier digital tools

This launch builds on Surrey’s broader move toward digital customer service. Last year, the City rolled out the Development Inquiry Assistant chatbot for questions on renovation, development and construction.

That earlier chatbot has seen strong public use, so staff expect similar uptake for the Surrey waste chatbot. Together, these tools signal a shift toward faster, self-serve access to city information.

Calendars move online amid mail uncertainty

The waste chatbot also connects directly to the City’s Sorting Guide and Collection Calendar. It can look up collection days and explain how to sort items using the same information found in the annual booklet.

However, the 2026 waste collection calendars will not arrive by mail because of uncertainty around Canada Post strike notices. Residents can instead view the calendar online or pick up a paper copy at City Hall, the Operations Centre, recreation centres or libraries.

How residents can learn more

Residents can try the Surrey waste chatbot and explore other waste programs through the City’s rethink waste webpage. There, they can find details on cleanup events, drop-off options and proper disposal methods for difficult items.

Using the Surrey waste chatbot and the online calendar together should make it easier for households to cut contamination and keep recyclables out of landfill.
