Snuneymuxw First Nation expands casino portfolio
A First Nation based in Nanaimo says it has signed an agreement to purchase the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam, a move that would mark its fifth casino acquisition in British Columbia. The deal was announced by Snuneymuxw’s economic development arm, Petroglyph Development Group, and is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The Great Canadian Casino Vancouver includes more than 900 slot machines and dozens of table games, along with entertainment and dining options.
Chief Mike Wyse of the Snuneymuxw First Nation said the acquisition represents another step toward economic self-determination for the nation and will strengthen long-term prosperity and financial independence. The purchase aligns with the community’s strategy of building a sustainable gaming portfolio, which already includes properties such as River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, Chances Casino in Maple Ridge, Casino Nanaimo and Elements Casino Victoria.
What it means for the community and region
Leaders say that by expanding its gaming holdings, the Snuneymuxw First Nation aims to create more stable economic returns that can support community programs and services. Petroglyph Development Group’s CEO noted that the Coquitlam casino has been an important part of the local economy and that future operations will continue to contribute to jobs and activity in Metro Vancouver. The transaction remains subject to required approvals under the Competition Act and other regulatory reviews before it is finalized.
Strategic growth in Indigenous-led gaming
This latest planned acquisition adds to a string of casino purchases by the nation in recent years, reflecting a broader trend of Indigenous-led investment in the gaming sector in British Columbia. Observers say the strategy reflects a blend of economic development and long-term planning as communities seek revenue streams that support social and cultural goals. Final details including the closing date and transition plans will be confirmed as the regulatory process moves forward.
