New leader aims to energize BC Greens

Emily Lowan, the newly elected leader of the Green Party of British Columbia, says she wants to bring the energy of activists into the party’s work and connect it more closely with government action. Lowan has been travelling the province, meeting supporters and talking about building a stronger, more engaged base for the Greens ahead of future elections.

Lowan was elected party leader in September 2025 after members voted for her to take over the role, a campaign during which she emphasised grassroots organizing and youth engagement. She became leader after the party’s previous head stepped down earlier in the year following the 2024 provincial election.

Activist roots shape leadership approach

Before becoming leader, Lowan was active in climate justice campaigns and community organizing. She attended the University of Victoria and built her reputation as a climate activist and campaigner before stepping into provincial politics. Her leadership style reflects that background, and she says the Greens should serve as a bridge between social movements and formal political power.

Lowan’s recent stops on a province-wide tour have focused on connecting with local communities, particularly younger voters and those disillusioned with traditional parties, to grow the party’s support and influence across B.C.

Party strategy and future plans

Lowan’s approach acknowledges the challenges the Greens have faced in recent years, including a period without representation in the legislature and the need to rebuild momentum after electoral setbacks. As leader, she has talked about expanding membership, running in by-elections when viable opportunities arise, and positioning the party to appeal to a broader base, including working-class and environmental voters.

Observers say Lowan’s leadership represents a shift toward energising the party internally and externally, with a focus on activism-informed politics that aims to boost support among younger and disaffected voters while also engaging more traditional political channels.

Looking ahead

While Lowan has not yet won a seat in the legislature, she has indicated her intention to run in an upcoming election or by-election when a suitable opportunity presents itself. In the meantime, she continues to build connections with grassroots groups, climate advocates and community supporters as part of her broader effort to grow the BC Greens’ presence and influence across the province.
