Surrey students share heartfelt letters of hope and cheer for anyone spending Christmas alone, reminding them they are loved and not forgotten.

Surrey Students Send Heartfelt Messages to the Lonely

Christmas can be a magical time, but for many, it’s also a lonely season. Recognizing this, a group of Grade 6 and 7 students at Old Yale Road Elementary in Surrey decided to make a difference this year. Under the guidance of teacher David Lee, the students created a heartwarming project: writing letters of encouragement to anyone who might be spending the holidays alone.

“While we all enjoy the festive spirit, it’s important to remember that not everyone has family or friends around during the holidays,” explained Lee. “This project helps students think about those who may feel isolated and how small acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day.”

Letters Filled With Empathy and Hope

The students poured their hearts into their letters, offering advice, encouragement, and reminders that everyone is valued. Lee shared the letters with the Surrey Now-Leader and the school district’s social media to spread their message far and wide.

Here’s a glimpse of their thoughtful words:

  • Rory (Grade 7): “You aren’t forgotten. Your sparkle always shines. Take care and Merry Christmas!”
  • Antonio (Grade 7): “When you feel lonely, do something you enjoy. Remember, there is always hope.”
  • Sabella (Grade 7): “You are always wanted in this world. Even if you are alone now, there’s someone meant to be your source of love and support.”
  • Karthik (Grade 7): “Do something small for yourself, like a walk in the park or a favorite treat. The world is better with you in it.”

Other students echoed similar messages of self-care, resilience, and community support, emphasizing that no one is truly alone. They suggested simple joys—listening to music, enjoying a favorite food, or connecting with nature—to help lift spirits during the holiday season.

A Reminder That Kindness Shines Bright

From encouraging words to practical tips for self-care, Division 3’s letters are a beautiful reminder that even small acts of compassion can make a big impact. The students’ notes also celebrate diversity and inclusivity, reassuring everyone—regardless of background or circumstance—that they matter.

Yasir, Salmikaa, Atina, and their classmates collectively sent a message that resonates universally: You are loved. You are valued. You are never forgotten.

Spreading Joy Beyond Surrey

By sharing their letters publicly, these young writers hope to inspire others to reach out and connect with those who may be struggling this holiday season. Whether through kind words, small gestures, or simply listening, their project shows that empathy knows no age limit.

As the students of Old Yale Road Elementary demonstrated, sometimes the simplest messages—you are cared for—can shine the brightest, especially when the world feels quiet and lonely.
