Two South Surrey Grade 12 students reach the final stage of the 2026 Loran Award, a $100,000 scholarship celebrating leadership, service, and character.

A Big Moment for South Surrey Students

Big dreams are taking shape in South Surrey. Two local Grade 12 students are now one step closer to winning one of Canada’s most prestigious scholarships. As a result, their achievement is already turning heads across the community.

Ibrahim Shaaban from École Earl Marriott Secondary and Aiden Rothmund from Grandview Heights Secondary have earned spots as finalists for the 2026 Loran Award. Because of their dedication and drive, they now stand among the country’s top student leaders.

Standing Out Among Thousands

More than 5,000 students from across Canada applied for the Loran Award this year. However, only 90 students made the finalist list. Therefore, reaching this stage alone marks a major achievement.

After rigorous semifinal interviews, judges selected Ibrahim and Aiden for their strong character, clear leadership skills, and deep commitment to helping others. In addition, both students showed a passion for making a real difference in their schools and communities.

What the Loran Award Offers

The Loran Award ranks as one of Canada’s most valuable undergraduate scholarships. Over four years, the award provides up to $100,000 in support. This support includes tuition waivers at 25 partner universities, yearly living stipends, and personal mentorship.

Moreover, scholars receive up to $14,000 for summer work experiences. They also attend annual retreats and join a national network of purpose-driven leaders. Because of this full-circle support, the program helps students grow both inside and outside the classroom.

What Happens Next

National selection decisions arrive in February. Until then, Ibrahim and Aiden wait alongside other finalists from across the country. While the competition remains intense, their chances remain strong.

Even if they do not receive the full Loran Scholarship, finalists still qualify for a $6,000 award. This funding can be used at any Canadian public university. Therefore, every finalist gains meaningful support for their future.

A Community Proud of Its Leaders

South Surrey has plenty to celebrate. Ibrahim Shaaban and Aiden Rothmund have already proven they belong among Canada’s most promising young leaders. Now, as the final decision approaches, the entire community cheers them on.

No matter the outcome, their hard work, service, and leadership already shine.
