Downtown Vancouver is expected to see large crowds this weekend as multiple demonstrations take place across the city, prompting increased police presence and traffic management measures.

The Vancouver Police Department says at least 11 protests are scheduled, including two major rallies connected to ongoing protests in Iran. Those demonstrations are expected to draw thousands of people to the area around the Vancouver Art Gallery and Robson Square on Saturday afternoon.

Police say recent demonstrations in the downtown core provide an indication of what could unfold this weekend. Earlier this month, officers estimate roughly 6,000 people took part in various protests tied to international and domestic issues, including U.S. immigration enforcement, unrest in Tehran, and the conflict in Gaza.

According to police, one of the largest gatherings occurred near the Vancouver Art Gallery, where crowds spilled onto surrounding streets and intersections. Officers temporarily blocked traffic in some areas to ensure pedestrian safety and manage congestion.

VPD Const. Megan Lui said police were also required to intervene when tensions arose between opposing groups during one demonstration. Officers stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating into a physical confrontation, she said.

In anticipation of this weekend’s events, police have increased staffing levels downtown. The department says an additional 130 officers will be deployed on foot and on bicycles, alongside personnel trained specifically in crowd management.

VPD Sgt. Steve Addison said police support the public’s right to peaceful assembly and expression. He said officers will maintain a visible presence throughout the downtown area to ensure safety while allowing demonstrations to proceed.

Police are advising motorists, cyclists, and transit users to expect delays near major gathering points and to plan ahead if travelling through the downtown core this weekend.
