Fog Set to Slow Lower Mainland Morning Commute

Low Clouds and Fog Expected to Grip Monday Morning
Commuters heading out early Monday across the Lower Mainland should be ready for thick fog that may significantly limit visibility on roads and highways. A weather advisory issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that dense fog will settle over the region, lingering into Tuesday and making the start of the workweek’s travel more challenging than usual.

Atmospheric Conditions Fueling Fog Formation
Meteorologists explain that a broad area of high pressure parked over southern British Columbia is creating ideal conditions for fog to form and persist at ground level. Moist air trapped near the surface by this stable setup condenses into tiny droplets, producing widespread low-lying fog, especially in lowlands near waterways and coastal areas.

Cities and Routes Likely to Be Affected
The advisory spans a wide swath of the region, including communities such as Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Richmond, and Delta. Roads connecting these municipalities, along with sections of major commuter corridors, may see visibility drop suddenly, particularly in early morning hours and near bodies of water such as the Fraser River and Strait of Georgia.

Travel Delays Already Reported at Regional Airport
The dense fog pattern has already impacted operations at Vancouver International Airport, where flights faced delays and some were diverted over the weekend due to limited visibility. Airport officials say similar conditions could continue, affecting travel plans for passengers in and out of the region over the next few days.

Road Safety Tips for Drivers
Drivers should plan for slower travel speeds, turn on their full headlights, and keep safe distances between vehicles when moving through foggy stretches. Even if visibility improves temporarily in the afternoon, conditions are expected to redevelop at night under the same stable pressure pattern, so ongoing caution is advised through at least Tuesday.

What’s Ahead for the Week
While mornings will likely remain foggy, forecasts suggest some daytime brightness as fog thins and breaks up before redeveloping after sunset. The weather system is expected to weaken later in the week, which should help clear out lingering fog and improve visibility across the region.
