Cloverdale celebrates Hockey Day in Canada in Punjabi with live broadcasts, community fun, and a museum exhibit honoring hockey’s cultural impact.
Cloverdale Brings Hockey Day in Canada to Life in Punjabi
Cloverdale came alive on January 17 as it hosted Hockey Day in Canada in Punjabi, blending thrilling on-ice action with rich cultural celebration. Families, fans, and community members flocked to the city to witness a unique national broadcast, all while celebrating the sport that unites Canada.
Mayor Brenda Locke shared her excitement on Facebook, calling it “an incredible day of hockey, culture, and community.” She added, “It was wonderful to see families and fans come together for this national broadcast in Punjabi, celebrating the game while reflecting the cultural diversity that makes Surrey such a welcoming city.”
Live Broadcasts and Big-Screen Action
The nine-hour festival ran from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at two locations: the Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex (CSIC) and the Museum of Surrey. Hockey fans tuned in to OMNI Television, which aired the live broadcast from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at CSIC, followed by coverage from the museum from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Sportsnet hosts Randip Janda, Taqdeer Thindal, and Gurp Sian guided viewers through the day, delivering commentary, interviews, and stories connecting hockey to Canadian culture and Punjabi heritage. At the museum, attendees watched the Canucks-Oilers game on a giant screen while exploring interactive exhibits.
Part of a National Celebration
Cloverdale’s festivities were part of the larger Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, with Moncton, New Brunswick, serving as the main hub. Across the nation, every Canadian NHL team took to the ice. Highlights included the Flames facing the Islanders, the Senators versus the Canadiens, the Jets against the Maple Leafs, and the Canucks taking on the Oilers in the final game.
“Our Connection to Hockey” Exhibit Inspires Visitors
Museum-goers didn’t just watch hockey—they explored the Museum of Surrey’s special exhibit, “Our Connection to Hockey,” open until late April. The exhibit celebrates Surrey athletes, national icons, and hockey’s role in uniting communities.
According to the museum, the display “showcases grassroots hockey, women’s hockey, para hockey, Punjabi broadcasters, and more, highlighting the sport’s cultural significance and diverse impact across Canada.” Visitors enjoyed interactive displays that connected local stories to the nation’s passion for hockey, making it a memorable experience for all ages.
A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Sport
From live commentary to immersive exhibits, Cloverdale’s Hockey Day in Canada in Punjabi offered more than just a game. It was a celebration of community spirit, cultural diversity, and Canada’s love for hockey, leaving attendees inspired and connected.
