SURREY, B.C. — The Surrey Police Service has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia following a serious early-morning incident involving a stolen vehicle in Surrey.
Police say the incident occurred around 5:25 a.m. on January 21, 2026, when frontline officers spotted a vehicle reported stolen near Holt Road and 88 Avenue. Shortly afterward, the suspect vehicle collided with another motor vehicle and struck a person riding a scooter.
The driver of the stolen vehicle then fled the scene on foot. Officers requested assistance from Integrated Police Dog Services in an effort to locate the suspect, but the search was unsuccessful.
Emergency aid was immediately provided by police at the scene. Surrey Fire Services and BC Emergency Health Services also responded, and the injured pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Surrey Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation. As required under provincial law, the IIO has asserted jurisdiction to independently assess police actions surrounding the incident.
Police say 128 Street and 88 Avenue are expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators continue their work.
Due to the IIO’s involvement, Surrey police stated they are unable to release further details at this time.
