Surrey schools are sounding the alarm: more elementary campuses than ever are in urgent need of playground funding, as equipment ages and fundraising falls short. With modern playground replacements costing upwards of $200,000, PACs across the district are facing an uphill battle to provide children with the play spaces they need and deserve.
While classrooms remain central to learning, educators stress that the playground is equally vital for child development. “Playgrounds are where students build confidence, problem-solving skills, and lasting friendships,” said Vanessa Seco, Manager of Major Gifts & Endowments. “Inclusive, safe spaces help all children feel seen, supported, and connected.”
Surrey’s Office of Advancement has seen a steady increase in schools requesting financial help for playground projects. Though the Ministry of Education funds equipment for new schools, PACs are largely left to cover the cost of replacement or expansion themselves. For many communities, that’s an overwhelming task.
One recent success story came from Hyland Elementary, where the PAC raised $65,000—but it was a surprise $150,000 donation from an anonymous donor that made their dream playground a reality. “The best part was the shy thank-yous from students,” the donor shared. “The gratitude from the children and their letters meant everything.”
Right now, several schools urgently need help:
Rising construction costs and other school fundraising needs—from field trips to tech upgrades—only add to the challenge.
Surrey Schools accepts playground donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Every contribution over $20 receives a tax receipt, and every dollar helps give kids a safer, more inclusive place to grow and play.

“Every child deserves a joyful space to imagine, laugh, and build memories,” said Seco. “Playgrounds are where community begins.”
