Surrey, B.C., has become the first city in North America to introduce free, self-service sports equipment stations in public parks. The initiative aims to make recreation accessible to all residents, regardless of income or background.
Where the Stations Are Located
Thirty stations are being rolled out across more than 20 popular parks, including Cloverdale Athletic Park, Tamanawis Park, Bear Creek Park, and South Surrey Athletic Park. Residents can borrow soccer balls, basketballs, table tennis sets, and even fitness gear at no cost.
Why the Program Was Created
Mayor Brenda Locke says the goal is to remove financial and logistical barriers to sport. “This program ensures everyone can enjoy active living while fostering community connection and inclusion,” she explained.
Partnerships Making It Possible
The project is a joint effort between the City of Surrey, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, and Swiss-based Equip Sport, which operates more than 400 similar stations in Europe. Toronto is already planning a similar rollout, inspired by Surrey’s model.
Funding Without Taxpayer Costs
Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is covering all expenses, ensuring the program is delivered at no cost to residents or the city. “We are proud to help remove barriers so kids and families can enjoy the benefits of sport,” said Marco Di Buono, Jumpstart’s president.
How Residents Can Access the Gear
Equipment is available through the free Equip Sport mobile app, downloadable from Google Play and the Apple App Store. Users can locate a station, tap to unlock the gear, and start playing within minutes.
