Sask. Driver Arrested After Multi-Vehicle Crash in B.C.
A driver from Saskatchewan was taken into custody following a three-vehicle collision in northeastern British Columbia that left several people injured, RCMP confirmed Tuesday. The crash happened late Monday afternoon near Fort St. John on Highway 97, prompting a major police and emergency response.
Crash Involved Multiple Vehicles, Injuries Reported
According to B.C. RCMP, the incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the suspect’s vehicle collided with two others on the busy highway. First responders arrived to find multiple people with injuries ranging from minor to serious. They were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment, though police say none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
Investigators are still piecing together the exact sequence of events, but early evidence indicated that speed and impaired driving may have played a role in the collision.
Driver Arrested on Impairment-Related Charges
Police arrested the Saskatchewan resident at the scene on suspicion of impaired driving causing injury. He remains in custody pending further charges, which could be laid once the investigation is complete. RCMP say alcohol and possibly drugs are being investigated as contributing factors.
Officers continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence from the crash site, including measurements and vehicle damage assessments, to support charges and reconstruction of the collision.
Highway Delays and Safety Reminder
Highway 97 was closed for several hours while police and emergency crews worked at the scene, causing significant delays for motorists in both directions. Traffic was eventually reopened after collision investigators completed their on-site examination.
RCMP are reminding drivers to exercise caution on highways and plan for extra travel time. They also stress the importance of avoiding impaired driving, which remains a leading cause of serious collisions on B.C. roads.
Investigation Ongoing, Public Asked to Help
As the investigation continues, police are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage of the incident to contact the Fort St. John RCMP detachment. Videos and observations from nearby drivers could help fill in crucial details about how the crash unfolded.
Updates will be provided as charges are finalized and more information becomes available.
