A late-night gunfire call on New Year’s Day has now turned into a serious criminal case, as prosecutors approve multiple charges connected to a shooting in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood.
Police say the incident unfolded inside a residential home, setting off an investigation that quickly escalated due to the severity of the allegations.
What Happened on New Year’s Night
Just before midnight on January 1, police rushed to a home near 140B Street and 59 Avenue after receiving reports of gunshots. When officers arrived, they found one man injured inside the residence.
The victim was taken to hospital with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Thankfully, he was reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, another man at the scene was taken into custody without delay.
Serious Crime Unit Takes Over
Because of the nature of the incident, the Surrey Police Service’s Serious Crime Unit stepped in to lead the investigation. Over the following weeks, investigators gathered evidence and worked closely with prosecutors.
As a result, the BC Prosecution Service approved formal charges on January 28, marking a major step forward in the case.
Charges Approved Against Surrey Man
Police have identified the accused as 49-year-old Chanchal Badwal. He now faces a series of serious Criminal Code charges, including attempted murder and multiple firearms-related offences.
The approved charges include allegations of firing a weapon with intent to endanger life, possessing a loaded prohibited firearm, assault causing bodily harm, and breaching an existing release order.
Accused Remains in Custody
Badwal remains in custody as the legal process moves ahead. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 6, 2026.
Police have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. However, they confirm the investigation remains active.
