Three men are in police custody following an early-morning shooting in Surrey that investigators believe may be connected to the city’s ongoing extortion cases.
According to the Surrey Police Service, officers were conducting routine patrols in the Crescent Beach area shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday when reports came in of gunfire and a small fire outside a residence near 132 Street and Crescent Road.
Police say a home in the area was struck by gunfire, though the occupants inside were not injured. Surrey Fire Services quickly extinguished the small fire, preventing further damage to the property.
Multiple police units responded to the incident, including the Lower Mainland Police Dog Service and Delta Police. Officers located a suspect vehicle nearby, but police say the occupants fled on foot. The suspects were later tracked down and arrested after attempting to leave the area using a ride-share vehicle.
The three men remain in custody, but no charges have been laid at this time. Police have not released the identities of the suspects.
Surrey Police say the Major Crime Section is continuing to investigate whether the men are directly connected to the shooting and whether it forms part of the wider pattern of extortion-related violence seen across the city in recent months.
Officers involved in the response were part of Project Assurance, a proactive policing initiative focused on increased patrols in neighbourhoods that have been targeted by extortion threats, shootings, and related criminal activity.
Police say the investigation remains active and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
