The City of Surrey has approved plans to significantly upgrade 72 Avenue, with construction set to widen the roadway from two lanes to four between 144 Street and 152 Street.
City officials say the project is designed to reduce congestion, improve east-west traffic flow, and support long-term growth in the Newton area, one of Surrey’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
In addition to vehicle lanes, the upgrade will introduce dedicated walking and cycling paths, along with improved transit infrastructure. The changes aim to make the corridor safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users while accommodating increased traffic volumes.
The widening is part of a broader plan to transform 72 Avenue into a continuous east-west route across Surrey, improving connectivity between key residential, commercial, and transit hubs.
Construction on this section of 72 Avenue is expected to begin soon. The city says residents should expect traffic impacts during the work but notes the project will deliver long-term benefits for commuters and the surrounding community.
City planners have described the project as a long-awaited improvement that balances transportation efficiency with active transportation and safety upgrades.
