Investigation Finally Leads to Charges

Vancouver police say a lengthy investigation into a local physician’s alleged sexual assault of teenage female patients finally resulted in charges after delays linked to his travel outside Canada. Officers began looking into the allegations nearly three years ago, but investigators had to wait for the doctor’s return from China before proceeding with arrest and charges.

Allegations Span Years and Locations

Police identified 65-year-old Herman Hau Man Lee of Vancouver as the subject of the probe. The investigation began in March 2023 when authorities learned a 17-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted repeatedly at a clinic in Vancouver’s Chinatown. As the inquiry progressed, investigators uncovered a second alleged incident, this one dating back to 2015 involving a 14-year-old girl at a clinic in Burnaby. Lee was arrested in November and now faces multiple charges, including sexual assault and sexual interference.

Doctor Still Practising With Restrictions

Despite the serious charges, Lee has been released on bail and remains licensed to practise medicine in British Columbia. However, as a condition of his release, he is prohibited from treating patients under 16 unless another adult is present.

Police Urge Other Potential Victims to Come Forward

Vancouver police are encouraging anyone who may have had interactions with Lee and experienced harm to contact them. Investigators emphasized that reporting is a personal decision and may take time, but they promise trauma-informed support for anyone who comes forward. A dedicated tip line has been established to help potential victims report incidents confidentially.

Support Available for Survivors

At a recent briefing, police were joined by Leah Zille, executive director of The Treehouse Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. Zille said her organization offers guidance, counselling, and a supportive environment to help children and families navigate the reporting process and access professional care.
