Surrey council reviews $5.3M contract for road upgrades to improve access to the future Newton Community Centre.

Council Weighs Key Road Contract for Newton Centre Access

Surrey, B.C. – Tonight, Surrey City Council will review a $5.3-million contract that could transform how residents reach the upcoming Newton Community Centre. The project focuses on road and utility upgrades surrounding the new facility, ensuring smooth access for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

Extending 70 Avenue: Safer Streets Ahead

The contract covers the extension of 70 Avenue, stretching from King George Boulevard across the railway to 138 Street. Sidewalks and cycling paths will be added to make commuting safer and more convenient. Meanwhile, 136B Street, running from 70 Avenue to 71 Avenue right in front of the future centre, will also receive major upgrades.

Mayor Brenda Locke shared her excitement:
“It’s thrilling to start building a road to what will become a landmark community hub in Newton. These upgrades will make it safer and easier for everyone to access the new facility, whether by car, bike, or on foot.”

A Hub for Recreation, Culture, and Community

The Newton Community Centre promises to be a modern, multi-purpose space catering to residents of all ages. With recreation, wellness, cultural, and library amenities, the centre reflects extensive community input and Surrey’s goal of creating inclusive spaces that strengthen neighborhoods.

Strategically located on the east side of King George Boulevard—just south of the Newton Arena and next to the Newton Seniors Centre—the centre will also be easily reachable via local transit. Officials anticipate the centre will open by 2030.

Preparing for Growth and Transit Access

The new road infrastructure isn’t just for today—it’s a step toward the future. Improvements will support Bus Rapid Transit connections to the Newton Bus Exchange and integrate seamlessly with the Newton Town Centre road network. TransLink is contributing funding, signaling the project’s role in supporting Surrey’s long-term growth.
